Abstract

Prevalence of intestinal parasites growing in Brazil and in many countries so expansive. The intestinal parasites comes in several ways, including by consumption of contami-nated vegetables, which represents a significant worldwide problem. The objective of this study is to assess the contamination by intestinal parasites in vegetables commer-cialized in Serra Talhada, in Pernambuco state. Samples of vegetables were collected at the production units (vegetable gardens) and the receiving unit of the Food Acquisition Program (FAP) and several commercial establishments in the municipality. Samples were placed in plastic bags and kept in an isothermal box, then sent to the laboratory of Biology Academic Unit of Serra Talhada — UAST/UFRPE. For the identification of para-sites was performed the spontaneous sedimentation. It was observed that the lettuce samples analyzed 97.5% were positive for parasitic forms and other microscopic organis-ms, including eggs and larvae of nematodes, protozoan cysts, cestodes eggs and some arthropods (insects and mites). Is extremely important to know the producers and han-dlers in general with respect to contamination, as well as the knowledge of the techni-ques developed for sanitizing vegetables crops, aiming at diminishing the contamination occurred in all steps occurring from cultivation to consumption.
