Abstract

The health surveillance, as a social practice in health, centers its actions on regulatory activities coordinated by the State. Search social protection through the control of risks and risk factors for health and public responsibility has to play this role. The creation of the Brazilian National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) in the late 1990s provided a new format for the health sector regulation in Brazil and allowed the reformulation of the practice in health surveillance, even if it is unfinished. One of the little explored within the scope of powers of ANVISA is the issue of research. From 2007 are published a series of institutional documents related to research in health surveillance. The aim of this paper is to present recent research related documents published by the Agency and promoting discussion on the role of ANVISA as a promoter of health research in Brazil.
