Objective: To evaluate the knowledge on biological risks and biosecurity measures adopted by autonomous manicures in the municipality of Mamanguape, Paraíba, Brazil. Methods: It was a quantitative, descriptive transversal study with application of a semi-structured questionnaire. Results: All interviewed professionals were female, 72.0% learned the occupation by themselves, 78.0% had been working for over ten years, 94.0% were aware of the risk of illness associated with the profession. As for immunization against hepatitis B, 78.0% said that they had had all 3 mandatory vaccine doses. The main measure taken to prevent contamination was autoclaving (79.0%). Regarding the cleaning of equipment, 47.0% use soap and water, 16.5% acetone and 16.5% alcohol; and 67.0% do not use personal any protective equipment (PPE). Conclusion: Collective and individual risks were identified and related to the performance of manicures/pedicures in a small city. This workforce is mostly unaware of the risks of their professional practice and does not use PPE properly. There is a necessity of further attention to the performance of manicures by the municipal health surveillance, promoting changes aimed at a safe professional practice and at the health preservation of both professionals and customers.Downloads
