The objectives of this study were twofold: evaluate the nutritional quality of meals consumed by employees of an agricultural industry and to assess the nutritional status of those employees. The meal quality was evaluated by diet quality index (DQI) and nutritional status of workers was assessed on the basis of body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC) and body fat percentage (BFP). Results showed that in workers, on average females have high values of BMI, WC and BFP. In addition, females have tendency to be 3.9-fold overweight in comparison to males. Lunch quality on the basis of DQI was at the category of “need for improvement” as it contained excess of fat and sodium; and an inadequate supply of carbohydrates. In addition, the constituents of the basic basket were also inadequate as they contained a low percentage of carbohydrates and proteins along with extra fat and sodium. In general, these results showed the need for a broad implementation and regulation of public policies for the promotion of a healthier diet and obesity control program in workers.Downloads
