The aim of this work was to characterize fishing in the municipality of Itaqui, Rio Grande do Sul, and fish handling and marketing. Data were collected, from September 2013 to January 2014, by participatory observation, interviewing fishermen who work in continental extractive fishing; a questionnaire was applied. Subsequently, the information was quantitatively assessed. A socioeconomic profile of fishermen, with the following characteristics, was drawn: over 60.0% of them were male, unmarried and with incomplete elementary school. They were classified as artisanal fishermen, with a mean of 23.5 years of experience in the activity and a family average monthly income of a minimum wage. About 20 tons of fish (monthly) were captured, predominantly using gill nets, along the Uruguay River in the city. In addition, Itaqui fishermen sell gutted, whole and frozen fish and 24.5% of them conserve captured fish under inadequate conditions of temperature. Therefore, it is necessary to develop policies to invest in modern methods of capture, processing and marketing of fish, ensuring food security to consumers.Downloads
