Abstract

The genus Campylobacter belongs to the family Campylobacteriaceae wich is represented by bacterias that inhabit the intestinal tract in various species of animals and is associated with foodborne disease in many countries. Several virulence factors associated to bacteria of this genus can lead to campylobacteriosis, which although it is self-limited in some cases may be the trigger for Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). The main species responsible for making campylobacteriosis a zoonosis of great importance to public health belong to the thermophilic group, represented by C. jejuni, C. coli and C. lari. C. coli is considered as normal part of intestinal flora of pigs and because of the great socio-economic importance of the consumption of this meat in Brazil, epidemiological studies covering the entire production chain are necessary. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of thermophilic species in pigs in the state of Rio de Janeiro where 120 samples were collected, of which 100 originated from fecal material and 20 from carcasses. C. coli was isolated in 28 samples of fecal material, however it was not isolated from carcasses. Despite the level of colonization detected in this study is lower then other countries, pork meat can be an important mean of campylobacteriosis transmission to humans, mainly from non inspected slaughterhouses.
