Abstract

Health services have incorporated a wide variety of technological innovations, specialty in hospitals services. This article presents an analysis of the role of Sanitary Surveillance in hospital services, and offers subsidies that help make the practice of sanitary control in Brazilian hospitals more compatible with the reality of hospital organization in the country. It is a descriptive study, built on a bibliographic search in the area of Sanitary Surveillance and hospital organization, with no restrictions on date or language, and with the help of specific descriptors. The text offers a historical analysis of health ser-vices in Brazil, with an evaluation of the evolution of Sanitary Surveillance and the te-chnologies it handles, in comparison to the dynamic transformations of hospital institu-tions. The text contains suggestions of initiatives that could make Sanitary Surveillance even more integrated with this ever changing reality of health services in Brazil.
